Oh boy, if things hadn't been so shitty lately, I would totally boycott Apple. I'm keeping things up for now, but when my mac fails, I don't know if I'll buy a new one and continue developing for apple devices.

For many types of apps, yes it could work. In some cases, though, it just won't cut it. However much improved performance etc there is always going to be native technologies which hasn't yet or cannot be made into a web standard. How is for example bluetooth in the browser nowadays? Or handling USB devices? Or ARCore and ARKit? In other words, most things which makes mobile interesting.

We must also not forget that the web browser is just that, a hypertext reader, and was never intended to be a cross platform application framework, which shows. Recent developments are promising though, and I'd bet that something involving WebAssembly and OpenGL/Vulcan/Metal outside the browser will make a difference in the right direction.

That said, I agree that many apps could and should have been websites or PWAs. Why download an app for Wikipedia, IMDB or Reddit? I just don't get it, and I'd rather use the websites for those.

PWA's simply are not there yet. Installation, let alone discovery, is not the easy smooth experience that is necessary for mass adoption and unless something comparable to the app stores appears for PWA's they never will. And they won't, because there the option of alternative app stores has been around for Android for a long time and while these exist, none of them are even close to challenging Google's Play store.
As for bypassing Apple, it can still be done. Hackintosh or a Mac-in-the-cloud setup; it can be a struggle to get done and really is best left simply to the final artifact creation stage of development using a cross language technology (I wouldn't try developing natively), but it does work.

Guys, you are not getting the point here. It is not only about building a project. There was a time when people never use to talk about user experience and then Apple iPhone was launched and it changed the whole dynamics and the perspective about how we look at software. It is always about the experience that you give to your customer. And compromising on experience and gaining some quick profit
…will just deliver the job not the Experience…
There are places where we can go with PWA. Few simple layouts here & there. But if you have to deliver a remarkable user experience with speed, security, etc. native is the only way to go. Also if you have to support multiple platforms and adapt to device-specific features Viz. if you want your app to support Apple TV & Apple watch as well as iPhone, iPad & Mac, native is the best bet.
Always get the best out of the platform iOS, Android, etc.
Remember money is just a byproduct… invest in experience…

And now…..I make native apps for a living. 😂

I've been thinking about this for a VERY long time. I think the metaverse is something that is (extremely) slowly coming to fruition – through WebXR but will utilise PWAs the most. I think a lot of companies won't be able to communicate their visions through all the restrictions of the current standards of app stores so will just have an AR button on their normal website which will overlay all the special offers in their store while the customers walk around. Customers won't have to worry about network signal or data charges since they will connect to the store's local 5G wifi hotspot.

Love the channel but all honest you could of just got a mac mini 2014 for about 300-400 for ios and mac dev which I'm doing and build your own PC. Would last alot longer and you would not have to pay so much money for no value. You don't have to get this beast iMac and pay small fortune. Heck I'm using my 4+ year old PC with 5820 6 core, 1060 gtx and 32 gigs DDR4 with Windows 8.1 and the work flow is amazing. I also use Jump desktop to connect to my ios and mac machine and will NEVER support Apple with buying new EVER again. Great Video!

    PWAs are already ready.
Just think about how much time you spend on the web versus actual apps.
Nowadays you spend all day on a browser.

Perhaps the key for a true change into PWAs is to have a really good WordPress plugin that converts it to a reliable PWA. That said, I've been using Windows for decades and bought a macbook pro recently. I'm glad there's companies like Apple, that at least think differently…

I believe this video highlights a basic truth. Some apps should be PWAs (probably most), and other apps should be native due to the native hardware compatibility they require (like intense graphic rendering).

I've been told that, so long as it is a simple app, you can make it appear to be a 'conventional' app, put it on the app stores, have your cake and eat it. Is that just hype?
